Have you just put the wrong fuel in your car? If so, you have just joined over a million other motorists in the UK. This problem is so wide spread it happens every 3 and a half minutes in the UK alone.
If you find yourself stranded with a tank full of petrol in a diesel car then follow these simple steps. Firstly don’t start the engine, or if you have realized after you started the engine turn it off immediately, as petrol in a diesel engine can cause major problems.
Next you need to get the fuel tank drained the easiest way to do this is by calling a mobile fuel drain company to come and drain the wrong fuel from your cars fuel tank on the spot. The system might need the engine bay flushed as well, especially if the vehicle has been started. There is normally an extra charge for this.
Once the fuel system has been cleaned, some new fuel can be added and then the fuel system will need to be primed to remove any air from inside the fuel lines and filter. Once complete the vehicle can then be started back up. Damage can result from putting petrol in a diesel car or diesel in a petrol car so it is important not to run the vehicle on the wrong fuel.
The cost of repair if damage is caused can cost thousands to correct, so it is always best to get the fuel tank drained regardless of how much of the wrong fuel has been put into the fuel tank. It is also advised that the fuel filter is also changed after the system has been drained and flushed, this is because the wrong fuel can actually block the filter and restrict fuel flow to the engine and injectors causing your car to run rough or not run at all.
